Thomas Swendsen

It is with a heavy heart we announce that Thomas Swendsen had passed away peacefully on August 3rd 2024 at the age of 76. Thomas was born in Brooklyn New York to Fredrick Swendsen and Jane Swendsen (Simpkins) and grew up in Gerritsen Beach, New York.

 

During his childhood, Thomas enjoyed fishing and diving into the ocean near his home as well as playing with his many maternal cousins. He graduated from Sheepshead Bay High and soon joined the Navy but was switched to the NSA. He was soon stationed in Danang Vietnam where he did two combat tours and survived the Battle of Bridgeramp.

 

Thomas soon returned home from Vietnam and eventually met his wife of 40 years Amy Swendsen (Greisman) and the two had a daughter, Jayne Swendsen before moving to New Jersey for 18 years. During that time, Thomas worked for New York City Sanitation for 23 years up until his retirement due to injuries he received after his first responder actions during 911.

 

He and his family eventually moved to Dunnellon Florida where he spent the final seven years of his life.

 

Besides fishing, Thomas was also a woodworker as well as into creating pottery, moonshining, shooting guns and loved watching the nature outside his home, especially during the famous rainstorms of Florida.

 

He is predeceased by his mother Jane and father Fredrick, survived by his loving wife Amy, daughter Jayne, his three cats Natsu, Weasley and Thor, but also his many loving cousins and friends.

 

Thomas will be sorely missed.
