John Warner Wilson, age 87, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and unmistakable wit. He was born on April 3, 1939—though family tradition fondly held that his true birthday was April 5, a small mystery attributed to the record-keeping of the time.
John graduated from West Genesee High School in 1958 and briefly attended SUNY Cortland, where he studied liberal arts. Shortly thereafter, on January 29, 1959, he enlisted in the United States Navy as an E1. During his service aboard the USS Prevail, he contributed to important seafloor mapping efforts while also becoming known for his sarcastic, snarky, and prankster-like sense of humor—a trait that would remain with him throughout his life. Through dedication and hard work, he rose to the rank of E5 and was honorably discharged on January 23, 1963, completing his reserve obligation on January 28, 1965.
Following his military service, John pursued his calling in funeral service, graduating from Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in June 1963,with high marks! He began his career with B.L. Bush & Sons and went on to become a respected and trusted figure in the Skaneateles, New York community. From 1970 to 1978, he solely operated the funeral home while living with his family in the historic Thayer House on East Genesee Street. His commitment to service extended beyond his profession—he served as President of the Rotary International Club 2539 from 1976 to 1977, embodying the spirit of community leadership.
In 1978, John relocated to Palm Bay, Florida, before settling in Ocala in 1984. There, he continued his life of service with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired in 2003. His quick wit, dry humor, and playful mischief were constants—bringing laughter to those who knew him, often when they least expected it.
John will be remembered for his steady presence, strong work ethic, and the unique humor that made him unforgettable.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Elizabeth A. Wilson; his son, Scott W. Wilson; his brother, Warren William Wilson; his nephew, Bradley Pickard and family; and his niece, Bridgette Sweet and family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Velma Warner Wilson Leffler; his beloved wife, Lois Annette Wilson; and his sister, Joan Butcher.
In honor of John’s life and memory, memorial donations may be made to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP.org), Mental Health America (mhanational.org), or the National Alliance on Mental Illness(nami.org).
John’s life was one of quiet service, deep roots, sharp humor, and enduring love—a legacy that will live on in all who knew him.
