Barbara Joan Simpkins (Sexton), age 95, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones, on April 1, 2026, in Ocala, Florida. Born on March 25, 1931, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, she was the cherished daughter of Rose and Leo Sexton.

Barbara led a remarkable life filled with love, faith, and dedication to her family and community. She spent many years as an assistant and lead editor at the Dunnellon Press before continuing her career at the Ocala Star Banner, where she worked in the publicity department until her retirement. Her contributions to local journalism left a lasting impact on the communities she served. She and her husband and a group of friends brought the first ambulance and rescue service to the Dunnellon area. They were very active in the Dunnellon community.

Barbara was deeply devoted to her family and faith. She was of the Catholic faith and lived her life guided by compassion and prayer. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Michelle Brown, Jolene Smith, Hunter Brumby, Meghan Brumby, Justin Simpkins, Jared Simpkins, Brian Simpkins, and Kristie McKenzie; as well as twelve great-grandchildren—and one more on the way—who brought immense joy to her life.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Alvin J. Simpkins; her sisters Eileen Wood and Clare Welles; and her parents Rose and Leo Sexton.

Barbara’s family feels truly blessed to have had 95 wonderful years with such a loving presence in their lives. Her unwavering faith assures them that she is now in the presence of our Lord.
