Philip John Hronec
Philip John Hronec, a beloved horseman, decorated veteran, and devoted friend to all who knew him, passed away recently after a lifetime of service — to his country, to his craft, and to the people he cherished.
Phil served his country with distinction during the Vietnam War, earning multiple medals for his courage and sacrifice. In his final days, he was honored with a Veterans Salute ceremony, surrounded by the voices and faces of those who loved him most. Friends and family came to be by his side, and through videos and visits, Phil was able to see just how deeply his life had touched others. He left this world peacefully, knowing without a doubt that he was loved.
Phil built a distinguished career in the world of Thoroughbred horse racing spanning decades, earning a reputation not only for his expertise but for his character. His journey led him through some of the most storied operations in American racing history, including managing the John Franks racing stable before being entrusted with one of Florida’s most legendary properties.
When Eugene Melnyk purchased the historic Winding Oaks Farm in Ocala, Florida in 2001, he turned to Phil to lead the operation — a testament to the deep respect Phil had earned throughout the industry. As General Manager, Phil helped build Melnyk Racing Stables into one of the top Thoroughbred operations in North America, overseeing a staff of 90 and the care of over 380 horses. During his tenure, he helped shepherd champions like Speightstown, winner of the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, and Sealy Hill, who became the first Canadian filly to win the Triple Tiara.
But to those who knew him, Phil’s legacy was never measured in wins alone. He was the kind of man who would help whoever he could, whenever he could — always steady, always generous, always kind. Whether you were a seasoned horseman or someone just starting out, Phil had time for you.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, excellence, and genuine human decency that will not be forgotten. The Thoroughbred world — and the world at large — is better for having had him in it.
Rest easy, Phil. You were loved
